I love it when kids make gifts that are truly functional! You get to show them off while using them too! One thing I wouldn’t be without in my kitchen is a spoon rest. Oh sure, you can grab a small saucer or something to set your stirring spoon on in order to avoid making a mess on your stove top or counter, but that can’t compare with this delightful Helping-Hand Spoon Rest made by a child in your life.
This project is going to be made with Sculpey clay because it’s the most pliable and easiest for children to work with plus it comes in a huge variety of colors.
Here’s what you need:
a medium-sized oven-safe glass bowl
a rolling pin
2 packages of Sculpey clay in two different colors
Preheat your oven to 270* (or temp recommended on the clay package). To soften this polymer clay you need to open the brick and break it into small pieces. Then pick up a couple of pieces at a time and squish and squeeze them with your fingers. Soften each color separately. Once it is softened combine the two colors together for a beautiful marbled effect. (Just resist the temptation to keep squeezing or you’ll blend the colors completely
Now roll out the clay to a thickness of about 1/4″ and lay the palm of your hand on the clay and trace it with a knife. Tracing your own hand with a knife can be very challenging to children so you may need to help here. Or, if you have older children have them do the tracing for each other.
After you have traced your hand with a knife, take a spatula and gently lay the hand in the bowl where the curve of the bowl will shape the hand into a perfectly curved spoon rest. (You can also lay the hand on the over-turned bowl but typically bowls have a bit of a ridge around the bottom that will be impressed into your hand… for a smoother, more bowl-like effect place it inside the bottom of the bowl)
Bake for 30 minutes then let cool.
For a shiny finish, coat the spoon rest with Future Floor Polish and let dry. Your gift is ready to be delivered!
